Author: Stacey Kennedy

Tess doesn’t have to do this alone. Not only does she have her ghost-lover, Kipp McGowen, but the department has brought in a medium. Review: Mark of the Seer by Jenna Kay

Synopsis:

Clarity Miller always thought of her life as semi-normal. She had friends that would do anything for her, a boyfriend that was madly in love with her, and a roof over her head that she shared with her aunt.

Everything seemed to be falling into place. That is, until the day she met Sam.

When Sam informs her that he’s her guardian angel and that she has been given the gifts of a Seer, her life starts spiraling out of control. She wants nothing to do with the spiritual realm.

All she wants is to have a normal life as a teenager, but when a tragedy occurs that causes the whole town of Garlandton to fall to its knees she realizes that she has a very important decision to make.

Should she embrace the life of a Seer?
Only time will tell . . .

Review:

Mark of the Seer is the first book in Jenna Kay's Seer Society series. It's a good young adult story featuring a 17 year old girl named Clarity. Despite wanting to get away from the small town she lives in, things are going well. Things suddenly change though, when she sees her guardian angel for the first time. Clarity finds out that she is a Seer – she is capable of seeing angels and demons. Things go downhill from here, and she is faced with things that no teenage girl should have to face. All she wants to do is have a normal life.

The characters in this book are great. Clarity is just a typical high school girl that most readers can relate to. Her and her friends do a lot of partying and things that they shouldn't, but I guess that makes it all the more realistic. My favorite character was Clarity's boyfriend Brenton. He is just the sweetest guy and reminds me so much of my husband back when we were in high school. I thought the relationship between Clarity and her guardian angel, Sam, was interesting. He is an attractive boy that seems to be her age, so I fully expected a romantic relationship to happen. Instead, she sees Sam as more of a brother.

I like the southern, small town setting. I live in a small town surrounded by cornfields and it seems like not many stories are told from areas like this. I have to admit though, I can see the use of the word 'ya' bothering some people. In some phrases, using 'ya' instead of 'you' seemed a little awkward to me.

Overall, I really liked this book. Romance is not the main focus in this book, but I would recommend it to anyone who loves to read YA paranormal romances.

Review: The Path by H.K. Savage

Title: The Path
Author: H.K. Savage
Source: Received from author in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

Magick is real. And there is a secret world complete with its own agency, Veritas, to control those who would wield their power over “regulars”, or threaten the secrecy that keeps them all safe from the persecution that nearly destroyed them. For Cassie, a mixed blood witch, it’s the only world she’s ever known though she’s never embraced her role as agent for Veritas. For Drew, a witch born to a non-magickal family, it answers so many of his questions. It is also the cause of so much loss and pain. And now, as he and Cassie attempt to find his missing brother, rumored to be working with a rogue witch and cult leader, it threatens to take the last of his family. Or will
magick save it?

Review:

The Path is a Paranormal Romance by author H.K. Savage. This novel centers around Cassie, a mixed blood witch who struggles with her powers. Cassie is an agent for Veritas, an agency that polices witches. Because of the issues with her own powers, Cassie is on the verge of losing her job and letting down her family. She basically has one more chance to prove herself – which is a difficult case involving one of the most horrible witches the company has ever dealt with.

This is a great story involving witches, murder, mystery, and romance. Cassie is assigned to question Drew to see what his brother's connection is with the rogue witch, Terry Pritchard. It turns out, that Drew has some magick of his own that he is unaware of and Cassie ends up needing to protect him. With these two spending so much time together, it becomes hard for them to resist the attraction they feel for one another. This leads to some nice steamy moments – passionate but also PG-13 at the same time. For those of you who like a little steam without all the graphic details – this is for you!

This book is well written and also well edited. The story was mostly told from Cassie's point of view, but the viewpoint sometimes changed to other characters. On one hand, I liked it because it was nice to know what the other characters were thinking – but at the same time it was sort of distracting. Parts of the book were a little slow, but then I felt that the ending was a little rushed. I didn't feel completely satisfied with the ending – I just wanted to know more about what happened. I don't know if this is going to be part of a series or if this is a stand alone book. Overall, it was a good book and I would read more by this author.

Review: Demon Revelation by Allison Karras

Title: Demon Revelation (Samantha Carver #2)
Author: Allison Karras
Source: Received from author in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

It’s been almost a year since evil sprung from the dead cemetery soil of Freeport, Oregon. A year since Samantha Carver, with the help of mysterious stranger Shane Damon and her cousin Terry, picked up her baseball bat and fought the demons stalking her. It’s been a year of relative peace and quiet and a chance to be a normal teenage girl. But the tides are changing. Once again, Samantha must summon all her strength to fight the impending darkness that is growing stronger by the day. Sam begins to be plagued by a series of vivid visions. Dreams of dying under a blood-red moon in a faraway place. Of a man whose eyes glow with the fires of hell. Of murderous demons after her flesh.
With Shane's help, Sam begins unlocking the visions, discovering a dark and terrible secret that threatens to do more damage to Sam’s world than the demons ever could.

Review:

Demon Revelation is the second book in the Samantha Carver saga by Allison Karras. I really enjoyed the first book, and I possibly even liked this one even more! In Demon Revelation, Sam is still trying to kill the demons. It is such a huge burden put on a teenage girl. Life only gets more complicated for Sam this time around, but she has such strength and determination to keep on going.

Sam has interesting visions throughout this book. Toward the end, these visions are revealed and came as a complete shock to me. I love the way these visions were woven along into the story. There is also something new that Sam finds out about the demons – which makes overpowering these demons almost impossible.

There is a slight love triangle in this story that I enjoyed. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely not a romance book! It's closer to horror than anything, and there's not a lot of time to figure out feelings when you're out killing zombies. I don't normally read anything horror or mystery related beyond regular paranormal romances, but these books are great. The author has a wonderful style of writing.

I'd recommend this series to anyone who loves YA paranormal and/or loves zombie books. I wouldn't say the book is outright scary – just creepy. This is an author that I think you should take a chance on. I really, really can't wait for Demon Redemption to come out later this year!

Review: Darkness in the Blood by Vicki Keire

Synopsis:

Caspia Chastain finally has what she’s always wanted. She’s in a supportive relationship with a one-of-a kind guy. (Really. He’s the only one of his kind. Ever.) Her brother is so healthy it’s mildly terrifying. She hasn’t drawn the future in ages, her school schedule is creepy professor free, and her job as Whitfield’s only Coffee Goddess remains secure.

But someone is kidnapping Nephilim descendents and using them to build an army. An unpredictable new gift threatens to consume her. With it comes a persistent dream: a strange young man with gifted blood who may hold the key to her ancestry. Whitfield has enough buried secrets to protect its residents, though, even if that protection comes with a price.

Ethan has secrets, too. He’s never spoken of his long life before meeting Caspia. When his past catches up with him, it could tear their relationship and the Realms apart. Soon, Caspia and Ethan must discover if the light and life they’ve built together can withstand the gathering darkness.

Review:

Darkness in the Blood is the second book in Vicki Keire's Gifted Blood series. Caspia has a lot to deal with in this book, most of which I can't talk about without spoiling anything. It's another well written book by this author with a lot of emotion and mystery mixed in.

I have to say that I was a little disappointed with Ethan and Caspia's relationship though. There just seemed to be a wall between them. No romance, no sparks, etc... Caspia finds out that she doesn't really know anything about him. I am still rooting for these two though. The character of Asheroth really interested me in this book. His moods change so dramatically – it makes me wonder who the real person is that he hides under his shell.

There was a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of this one. There were also some hanging threads – some characters just sort of disappeared from the storyline. Of course, there is another book which will hopefully be coming out soon. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next, and to have my questions answered.

Review: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Synopsis:

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister Primrose, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before — and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Review:

I feel like I'm probably the last person in the world to read The Hunger Games. I have to admit that I just wasn't interested in it by seeing the cover. I know that's shallow, but to me it looked like a “man book”. Not that the cover wasn't a good cover, there was just nothing feminine about it. I'm sure I don't even have to go over the premise with you all. If you haven't read it, then you've probably at least heard all about it. I've seen other book bloggers talk about this book for what seems like ages now, so my interest slowly raised. When I saw everything about the movie opening up this month, I decided that I ought to give it a try – and I'm glad I did.

It was a wonderfully written book filled with lots of descriptions of the time period. I did, however, think that the book had a lot of slow parts – especially toward the beginning. That's the main reason I'm giving this a 4 instead of a 5. This dystopian book had a great premise, but I'm not exactly sure why the government was the way that it was. Maybe I will find out more about that in the other books.

The characterization in this book is great. You get to start feeling attached to so many of the characters. Katniss is a courageous girl who makes an awesome heroine. There are two great guys who have the potential to be a love interest. I really came to like Peeta, but I'd really like to see Katniss with Gale. Though, to be honest, my moms' name is Gale so that does weird me out a little bit. Speaking of names, almost all the names in this book are unusual.

This is not a fluffy, easy-reading type of book. These are very emotional times for these characters. The horrors they go through are unimaginable. It definitely makes you grateful for the things that you do have.

Author Spotlight and Giveaway with J. R. Pearse Nelson

It's been awhile since I've done an Author Spotlight - I'm determined I will be doing this more often. Today I'm featuring author J.R. Pearse Nelson. Keep reading for an interview with this author and a couple of giveaways!!!

********************************

When did you begin writing?
First of all, I’d like to thank Paranormal Opinion for having me on the blog today! I started plotting stories and naming whole casts of characters when I was a kid. I don’t know if I so much started writing, as it had me from the beginning. In 2004, I got serious – mostly because my muse had me in her grip. I worked on the same book for almost three years, but with my lack of experience, I didn’t do the story justice. I still hope to return to that book eventually, but I also come up with way more ideas than I’ll ever have time to write….so we’ll just have to see.

What's the biggest challenge of being an author?
Balancing all that goes into writing a book with all that goes into selling a book. To me, that’s the span I jumped when I became an author. I’ve been a writer for years, but I never had so many demands on my time. The writer part is far more natural for me.

About how long does it take for you to write a book?
These days, I write a first draft in anywhere from a month to four months. But it’ll be anywhere from six months to a year or more from when I start writing a book to publication. That doesn’t include plotting and world building, which I work on bit by bit for years before I begin a storyline.

How many books do you currently have published?
I’ve published two novellas in my Children of the Sidhe paranormal romance series, centered on modern-day descendants of old Irish deities. In 2012, I’ll publish the next two Children of the Sidhe books. I’ll also publish my first fantasy novel – Queen Witch – about a witch serving an immortal that does not have her best interest in mind.

Which of your characters is your favorite?
I’d have to say Alise, the female lead in my second book, Vessel. She’s a witch, and she’s pretty bad ass. (Excuse my language.)

What are some of your favorite books/authors?
The Mists of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley. This is the book that got me hooked on the King Arthur legend. The Kushiel’s Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey. The world is amazing – lush with detail. Daughter of the Forest, by Juliet Marillier. I felt like I was inside a new fairy tale; this book made the real world disappear. The Harry Potter books. What can I say? They’re practically perfect in every way. Inspired.

What do you do in your spare time?
I have two little girls, ages three and one, so I don’t really have “spare time.” Ha! But I make time to write, blog, and get out around town with my family. I’m trying to make more time for reading.

What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author?
I’m lucky to have my ideal career, in addition to being an author! I’m in economic research…which sounds kind of funny when you pair it up with paranormal romance, but I’ve actually worked out quite a niche for myself by capitalizing on my writing and editing skills in my day job.

What are you currently working on?
I’m writing the third book in my Chidlren of the Sidhe series, and outlining the fourth book. As soon as I finish this draft I’m going to start editing Queen Witch, the fantasy novel I wrote last fall. All three of those books will come out in 2012.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Just to keep writing through the pain of developing their craft. It takes a while to feel like a good writer, and you really have to push past any issues with pride and keep your nose to the grindstone. In my opinion, that’s true even after publication. The best use of your time is in writing your next book, and making it even better than the last – because that’s what you hope readers will be waiting for!

My Super Sweet 16th Century Cover Reveal

Synopsis:

On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her bubbly stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the family’s trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits . . . right into Renaissance Firenze.

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore.

Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

Excerpt:

Alessandra jerks back like I just suggested she prance around the square naked or something. “No! I believe I understand your meaning, and Lorenzo is certainly not my suitor. He is like a brother to me—the three of us grew up together.”

She resumes walking and I fall in step beside her, understanding there has to be more to the story. And as we near the end of the row, I finally ask, “If you’re not into the guy, then what’s the problem?”

At that same moment, a rich, deep chuckle hits my ears. My stomach involuntarily clenches and my gaze sharpens on the back of this mysterious Lorenzo.

Alessandra sighs. “That is the problem.” She places her hand on my arm and solemnly looks me in the eyes. “You must be careful. Lorenzo is beautiful, and it is not uncommon for a girl to walk away from meeting him with a piece of her heart left behind. But he is just eighteen, and not yet ready for marriage.”

I roll my eyes and laugh, then realize she’s serious. “Yeah, I assure you, there’s no danger on my end. I’m not exactly looking for marriage myself.” Because that would be crazy-town.

Alessandra wrinkles her nose as if she doesn’t believe me, but she removes her hand. We close the distance and Cipriano flashes me an open, honest to goodness, lighthearted smile.

“Lorenzo, this is the cousin I was telling you about.”

Slowly the guy turns and I fall head first into the richest chocolate-brown eyes I’ve ever seen. He blinks and long, luscious lashes feather across his bronzed cheeks. I can feel myself gawking, but I physically can’t drag my eyes away. Lorenzo doesn’t smirk or act all conceited, either. He simply stares back, his eyes casually skimming over me, causing my skin to warm and break out in a whole body tingle.

Time seems to stop, and the sounds of the market mute. Alessandra was right. This boy is beautiful.

And he’s looking at me.

Review: Gifts of the Blood by Vicki Keire

Title: Gifts of the Blood (Gifted Blood #1)
Author: Vicki Keire
Source: Found free ebook on Amazon

Synopsis:

Caspia Chastain, art student and barista, is gifted (or plagued, if you ask her) with the ability to draw the future, usually at the worst possible times. Her parents are four years dead; everyday she watches her brother Logan fight his cancer diagnosis. Things get worse for Caspia the day she draws an angry stranger framed by planes of light and violent, bloody images. That exact same stranger walks up to her out of nowhere mere hours later knowing things he shouldn't, like her name, her brother's illness, and her strange ability. That's when Caspia discovers her hometown is a refuge for supernatural beings both Light and Dark, and she and her brother find themselves caught up in a war between the two that predates their very birth. In order to protect herself and her brother, she turns to the one who seems to have started it all: the man who walked out of her sketchbook calling himself Ethan.

But Ethan has his own agenda, Logan's getting sicker fast, and Caspia finds that drawing the future isn't the only strange thing she can do. Meanwhile, someone really wants all of them dead. In a town where Dark doesn't equal Evil and Light isn't always Good, Caspia and Ethan find themselves making strange alliances and even stranger sacrifices in order to protect those they love.

Review:

Gifts of the Blood is the first book in Vicki Keire's Gifted Blood series. It's about a young woman named Caspia who has the ability to draw the future. The only other person in her life is her older brother Logan, who is dying of cancer. All her other family members are dead. Between taking care of Logan, taking art classes, and her job, Caspia is under a tremendous amount of stress. If that isn't bad enough, Caspia draws the near future – which brings evil beings into her life.

I found this ebook for free on Amazon, and I was pretty impressed. It's one of those books I had trouble putting down. Ethan is a character that Caspia draws in her sketchbook before even meeting him. He already knows who she is, which scares the crap out of her. Despite that, she feels drawn to him. If only he wasn't so secretive...

I really liked the characters in this book. Caspia is great – someone you can relate to. Ethan is the swoon-worthy hero. I really even liked Caspia's brother Logan, and I normally don't care that much about background characters. This book is beautifully written – I really like the author's writing style.

The main thing keeping me from giving this book 5 stars was the sort of vague romance. I really like Caspia and Ethan together, but I have no idea if they were even intimate. I don't mean that a book has to have sex in it for me to like it, I just want to know what the “status” of the relationship is. I wanted to at least read more steamy parts, and also to know how serious they are about each other. Something just seemed a little off, but I'm having trouble explaining what I mean. Maybe it's just me...

The storyline was unique and enjoyable. I think any paranormal romance fan would enjoy this book, from teens to adults. Luckily, I was able to get the second book in this series while it was free on Amazon as well. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next!
