Review: Ten Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker

Title: Ten Tiny Breaths (Ten Tiny Breaths #1)
Author: K.A. Tucker
Source: Received through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.

Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.

But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.

Review:

Ten Tiny Breaths is the first book in the Ten Tiny Breaths series by K.A. Tucker. I've heard great things about this book for awhile now – I wish I wouldn't have waited so long to read it. It's an awesome story with amazing characters and an incredible plot.

The main character is Kacey, a 20 year old broken young woman who is just trying to get by day by day – and take care of her younger sister Livie. Besides for Livie, Kacey lost everyone she cared about in a car accident involving a drunk driver four years earlier. Kacey and her sister decide to make a fresh start in life. They move to Miami and get an apartment. Livie enrolls in high school and Kacey finds a good paying job. They make good friends and Kacey falls for their next door neighbor, Trent. It all seems a little too good to be true.

Trent is a great guy and Kacey is lucky to have him in her life. She is so used to keeping people at a distance, but it doesn't take long before she lets Trent in. There is some crazy sexual tension between them, but Trent is determined that they take things slow. He knows that Kacey has issues, and he wants her to get help before they go too far. Trent has all kind of secrets that he's keeping from Kacey, and just when she thinks that life couldn't get better – it all shatters.

This is a very emotional book. It has many lessons being told – not just about drunk driving, but about forgiveness and getting help when you need it. There's a big twist in the story that surprised me. The last part of the book was pretty intense. I was afraid that the book was going to end in a horrible way, but thankfully there is a happily-ever-after. Livie's book is next in this series, and I'm really looking forward to it.
