Lust After Death: Writing Ahead of the Curve

Hi Tishia! Thanks for having me on the blog today to talk about my recent release, Lust After Death!

I have a problem—I like to write wacky. Every time I create a new world, it’s just a little too far outside the box. Take my Ocean Shifter series (Mere Temptation, Mere Passion, and Shark Bait.) People thought I was nuts to write erotica about mermaids! Of course, about eight months after the last book came out mermaids surfaced as the next big thing. (Heehee, “surfaced.”)

That’s the story of my life, though! I always swing too early, hit a trend before it gets big, am left thinking “I told you so!” when everyone is blissfully moving on.

And I’m convinced it’s the same case with zombies! Lust After Death is the story of a zombie bride named Josie who’s rescued by a lost-soul hero named Bane. Through their love he’s (metaphorically, of course) brought back to life.

Personally, I love zombies! They’re part of the big, bad, crazy dystopian craze I see all over the place. I watch The Walking Dead, and have seen every zombie movie known to mankind. I like shows like Six Feet Under and Dead Like Me. Weird Science left a permanent mark on my psyche. When I heard that Charlotte Stein was writing zombies with Re-Awakening, and that Sommer Marsden had a zombie series beginning with We Kill Dead Things, I was on cloud nine!

Zombies were on the rise, I figured. And they were about to stage a bog, ol’ uprising against their vampire oppressors!

I was wrong. Well, not “wrong” necessarily, just ahead of the curve. It’s come to my attention that an awful lot of people are not ready for zombie-related erotica. No matter that my “steins” don’t decompose, and they’re extremely sexy and fun. The general public is still scared to death of zombies. (Why, I wonder, when vampires have long-ago ceased to be thought of as scary?)

However, I have faith. The next book in my Love-Bots series, Studenstein, is out now as well, and book 3, Built 4 It should be available in a month or two. Any moment now, the tides will turn and everyone will prick up there ears, thinking, “Zombies! I would totally like to read more erotic romances about them!”

Of course by then I’ll be writing about evil manta rays terrorizing an underwater city of steampunk mermaids. Yep, The Iron Mermaid is my current brain-wave. I just hope that this time, I’m not quite so far ahead of the curve. :)

Don’t forget to comment to win your copy of Lust After Death!

About the author:

I’d like to say that I started writing shortly after learning to hold a pencil and haven’t stopped since. Sadly, that’s not the case. I came to writing via a long and circuitous route that started with wanting to be a fiction writer at 11, morphed into wanting to be a scientist by 18, journeyed through becoming a doctor by 28, and plateaued at being a medical writer by 32. And now I’ve arrived full circle writing fiction again.

Through it all, I’ve always been an avid reader, with interests ranging from the humorous science of Mary Roach, through the fascinating commentaries on urban planning of James Howard Kunstler. I love comics, especially the French series Asterix the Gaul and Peter Bagge’s Hate.

Before I bought a Kindle in 2008, I imagined my first book would be non-fiction. E-books opened whole worlds to me of books I might never have considered reading in print form. I moved from the Twilight series, to young adult paranormal, through urban fantasy, to land smack dab in paranormal romance.

Authors like Nalini Singh and G. A. Aiken showed me a side of the romance genre I never imagined. When I moved onto Larrisa Ione and then Sydney Croft, I knew I had to try my hand!

I joined RWA, found some awesome critique partners who helped me transition out of technical writing and into fiction. I wrote books one and two of the Ocean Shifters series and found the lovely folks at Siren to publish it.

The rest is history!

Synopsis:
In the Pacific Northwest, where life hurries to keep pace with technology, a re-animated bride named Josie struggles to escape her creator and to find her identity in the half-erased circuitry of her mind and body.

Assassin Bane Connor just wants to get the girl to the Zombie Underground and receive his payoff-a mental reset that will erase his memories as well as his guilt. But an attack by a rival faction derails his rescue, and the wide-eyed female whose circuitry requires a husband tears at his hardened heart and ignites desire like he's never known.

Acting as Josie's spouse-substitute is tougher than Bane expected. The newborn stein needs touch to live, and wanting her is a complication he doesn't need. To make matters worse, she sees into the darkest recesses of his mind. The last thing a killer wants is for his lover to read his thoughts, but if Josie can love him the way he's programmed, perhaps Bane can find a way to heal his past.
